I Crossed the Ocean, 2018 – 2022

As a result of decades of civil war, generations of Tamils left Sri Lanka in search of peace, safety, and a chance at a better life. Created over five years, I Crossed the Ocean is a collection of stories and visuals that explores themes of migration, displacement, and diasporic identity. Stories were gathered through in-person visits and interviews in nine countries, as well as virtual interviews during the pandemic. Storytelling has the power to elevate the voices of those who may be historically excluded. This work aims to gather and protect these valuable voices and stories at risk of extinction by cultural erasure. These stories are a testament to the resilience of Tamil families, communities, and individuals across the world.
